The relationship between tourist and resident.

Consider the relationship between the resident/tourist and a chosen landscape or environment. While exploring your chosen subject, experiment with imagery and text that highlights these co-existing paradoxes.

Initially, I centered my focus on the tradition of the Glasgow Fair, a public holiday that has happened annually in Glasgow since the 12th century. Saltcoats and Largs are two seaside towns along the Ayrshire Coast which have been visited frequently by tourists coming for the Glasgow Fair and for general summertime fun throughout history. An important part of the process in order to answer this brief involved taking myself to these specific environments where the resident and tourists have interacted throughout history. While in the environment I had numerous strange interactions, which included a puzzled reaction from an elderly shopkeeper in the souvenir shop when I asked to take photos. This unfriendly experience gave me the inspiration for the wording in the final piece, which represents a neon shop sign with the real reaction of the shopkeeper. This reflects the reality of having an environment created to attract tourists, with the unwelcoming resident.
